Upstairs

joists-001.jpgIt’s been an odd week since we got back from Glasgow. Although we started the first floor joists, we really haven’t made a great deal of progress. We’ve been pottering away fixing joist hangers and sticking in joists but Suse’s heart has really only been on tree planting.

conifers.jpgOn the way back up, we called into the Mill Garden Centre in Armadale to see if Joe McIndoe had any apple trees and came away with a bargain lot of conifers. These had to be planted when we got back together with the left over ash seedlings and the very successful hedge cuttings. All this took a couple of days.

It has also been raining more than somewhat. In fact we didn’t leave the caravan on Thursday because it never stopped. Still it got the blog updated and we had plenty of books from the local library (open only two days a week but seems to have a better selection than we were used to in Bathgate).

We also took some time off to watch another chapter in  the Scottish football team’s “Road to Glorious Failure” and to explore the other side of the West Loch including Ardpatrick House. We now have a copy of “The Buildings of Scotland – Argyll and Bute” so when we see something with a bit of character, there is a good chance Frank Walker, the author, will have some usually precious comment to make about how badly it has been treated by its owners. It does, however, also give plenty of architectural backgound so at least you know what you have been looking at.

Still searching for the 3ml off road, training loop from the site that doesn’t involve knee deep mud. Thought I’d found something on the southside of the Whitehouse Burn but the last part was across the fields which at this time of the year are just saturated. Will keep on looking. Don’t want to embarrass myself at Carnethy.

joists-003.jpgToday we got the last of the beams and trimmers in for the stair opening and will no doubt proceed with more flooring and ladder studs when the weather permits. The forecast isn’t too good.

  1. Looking fab but aren’t you finished yet? Talk about hanging out a job! John H’s new car (mostly paid from the insurance payout) is running fine. Love what you wrote about the garage – John H has very fond memories of it and the midgies from hell. Still can’t believe the difference from when you started to now. Keep up the good work in progress.

  2. Good afternoon one and all!

The weather in (dry) edinburgh makes your decision to be outside building in novemeber even dafter than it sounded in this summers (non existent) hot spell.

Please keep me informed of your christmas movements (travel) as i’m here right through the festive period this year.

I did try and text a number i had for you a few weeks ago after another excellant black cats performance, i forget who pumped them that week, but as i got no reply presumed you either need a mast built into your house, had been blown away or have changed your number.

Anyway duty (as it does for those who work for queen and country) calls

    as ever

  3. Hello…

How exciting! Have had a few photos passed to me by Emily but wow, i’m impressed! Can’t see where the guest bedroom will be though, hint hint! 🙂
Hope all is going smoothly though and that you haven’t had too many disasters. I noticed that there was a wee mention to say you won’t be able to get your eco-equipment (wind turbine/hydropower) installed, thats a shame.
    Wrap up warm.
