Italy
What a treat to wake up to the sunshine in Rome! The apartment was again in a very convenient location, though it had an odd layout and wasn’t that well set up. Anyway, it had an impressive main door into the courtyard. We rested in the afternoon as John has a cold and had mince and tatties for dinner, then ventured out to the opera and found the church easily. It was obviously a limited production but to my surprise John was very taken with it and we looked it up on youtube with a view to watching it with English subtitles later.

Wednesday and Thursday were spent wandering round Rome without actually going in to see anything. The Coliseum was dreadfully busy as was the Trevi Fountain, we tried to find some free quirky things without success. The city is built on 7 hills and google maps struggled to keep us on the right level. The history here is on another level altogether time wise, thousands of years. We took the trains out to the coast where John had visited on his school trip and again found it windy. On our last night we found a nearby cafe where I could enjoy a tiramasu.

Overall, I think we were both pleased with the ‘experiment’. Train travel is efficient and easy and not moving every day worked well. In the future I would seriously consider using the train for a winter break, though not entirely sure how warm a place you could get to. It would also be worth doing some history background work.
